Looking for a solid half-day fishing adventure that won't break the bank or eat up your entire vacation day? Our 4-hour back bay trips in Avalon are exactly what you need. We're talking about getting you into fish-holding water aboard our roomy 20' skiff, where Captain Doug, Captain Jerry, and the Diamond Jig crew know every productive drop-off, channel edge, and grass flat from here to Stone Harbor. Whether you're a weekend warrior who lives for the bite or someone who just wants to wet a line and enjoy being on the water, this trip delivers without the hassle of heading offshore.
Your morning starts at our dock in Avalon where you'll meet your captain and get the lowdown on what we're targeting and where we're headed. The back bays here are like a maze of productive water - shallow flats where flounder hunt, deeper channels that hold stripers, and grass beds loaded with sea trout. We'll run to spots based on tide, time of year, and what's been biting lately. Don't worry about bringing anything except yourself, sunscreen, and maybe a cooler for your catch - we've got all the rods, reels, bait, and tackle sorted. The boat handles up to 5 anglers comfortably, so there's plenty of room to cast without getting tangled up with your buddy. Pro tip from guys who've learned the hard way: wear long sleeves, pants, and closed shoes. Yeah, it might be hot, but those greenhead flies will make your life miserable if you show up in shorts and flip-flops.
Back bay fishing is all about reading the water and matching your approach to what's down there. We'll be using medium-action spinning gear spooled with braided line for sensitivity and hooksets. Depending on what we're after, you might be bouncing bucktails and gulp baits along the bottom for flounder, working topwater plugs over grass beds for stripers, or drifting live bait near structure for sea trout. The beauty of bay fishing is the variety - one drift might produce a doormat fluke, the next could have you fighting a slot-sized striper that's ripping drag. Our captains are retired game wardens and lifelong locals who know these waters like their own backyard. They'll put you on fish and teach you techniques you can use long after your trip ends. We're not just putting you over fish - we're showing you how to catch them yourself.
"Great bay fishing! On time, knowledgeable, friendly and patient. I will do this again! Thanks team!" - Ricki. "Great trip with Capt Doug. Landed 12 Fluke. Amazing service and wonderful stories. I would recommend these guys to anyone who wants to catch fish and have a relaxing time. Thanks for everything. Mark" - Mark. "Me and my four teenage boys plus one of their friends went out with Captain Doug. We all caught fish and had an amazing time. I think we caught around 15 fish and one keeper. At the end we fought with a 75 pound cow head stingray for at least 25 minutes and it was awesome! The fight went over our allotted time but Captain Doug let us fight him until he surrendered and was next to the boat. Captain Doug, who is a retired game warden, was also very knowledgeable, open to questions, and extremely friendly. The biggest and best advice I can give anyone reading this is to listen to the Captain about wearing a long sleeve shirt, pants, socks, and shoes. Just deal with the heat. Don't be like me who wore shorts and flip flops because the greenheads will eat you alive! If you are debating this vs a party boat I would highly recommend going this route. We will definitely be back to fish with Diamond Rig Charters!!!" - John
Striped Bass are the crown jewel of back bay fishing here in South Jersey. These fish move into the bays to feed on spearing, mullet, and crabs, especially during the fall run when they're fattening up for their southern migration. You'll find them around structure, grass beds, and drop-offs where they can ambush baitfish. Stripers in the bay typically run from schoolie size up to solid keepers in the 28-35 inch range, with the occasional cow mixed in. What makes them so fun is their versatility - they'll hit everything from topwater plugs at dawn to live eels drifted along channel edges. The fight is pure striper too: strong initial runs followed by head-shaking bulldogging that tests your drag and your patience.
Sea Trout, or weakfish as the old-timers call them, are making a strong comeback in these waters after years of being scarce. These beautiful silver fish with their distinctive canine teeth love the deeper holes and channel edges where they can pick off small baitfish and shrimp. Peak season runs from late spring through fall, with the bigger gator trout showing up when water temps start dropping. They're notorious for their soft mouths - hence the name weakfish - so you need to keep steady pressure without horsing them. A good sea trout will go 3-6 pounds and provide plenty of excellent table fare. They're sight feeders that respond well to soft plastics, live bait, and small spoons worked near the bottom.
Southern Flounder are the bread and butter of back bay fishing, and Avalon's flats and channels hold some legitimate doormat-sized fish. These ambush predators bury themselves in sand and mud, waiting for crabs, killifish, and other bottom dwellers to wander within striking distance. Summer flounder season typically runs May through September, with the biggest fish moving through during their fall migration to deeper water. A keeper flounder starts at 18 inches, but we regularly see fish in the

We went out with Captain Doug. Captain was very knowledgeable about the local fishing grounds. The weather didn’t cooperate but we still managed to put a few flounder in the cooler. Great trip!

Blues are pure excitement on light tackle. These aggressive predators with their blue-green backs and razor-sharp teeth typically weigh 3-15 pounds in our waters. They hunt in schools, creating feeding frenzies that'll have your rod bent all day. We find them around bait schools in open bay areas and along structure during summer into fall. What makes bluefish special is their ferocious strike and bulldogging fight - they don't give up easy. Smaller "snapper" blues are perfect for kids and beginners. The meat is rich and oily, great smoked or grilled fresh. Local tip: use a wire leader or heavy fluorocarbon - those teeth will cut through regular line in seconds. When you see birds diving, get your lure in there fast.

Speckled trout are one of our most consistent back bay targets. These beautiful fish with their silvery sides covered in black spots usually run 14-24 inches and fight well above their weight class. You'll find them over grass flats and around structure in 2-6 feet of water. They're active year-round here, but spring and fall offer the best action when they school up. What guests love about specks is their aggressive strikes and acrobatic fights - they'll jump and make quick runs that keep you on your toes. The meat is tender and flaky, perfect for the dinner table. Pro tip: work your lure slowly through the grass beds. These fish can be finicky, so a subtle presentation often outfishes aggressive retrieves.

Flounders are the masters of disguise on our flats. These flat, oval-shaped fish with both eyes on their left side typically run 15-18 inches, though we catch some real doormat-sized ones up to 5 pounds. They bury themselves in sandy or muddy bottoms in shallow bays and channels, waiting to ambush prey. Fall is peak season when they're fattening up before heading offshore for winter. What makes flounder fishing fun is the challenge - you're sight fishing to fish you can barely see. When you do hook up, they fight with surprising power for a flatfish. The reward is some of the best eating fish in the ocean. My trick: look for their outline in the sand, then drop your bait right on their nose and give it a little twitch.

Stripers are the crown jewel of our back bay trips. These powerful fish with their signature dark horizontal stripes typically run 20-40 pounds around Avalon, though we see plenty of schoolies too. They love structure - drop-offs, bridge pilings, and rocky areas where they ambush baitfish. Spring through fall are prime times, especially during moving tides at dawn and dusk. What makes stripers special is their fight - they're strong, stubborn fish that'll test your drag. Plus, they're fantastic eating with firm, white meat. My local tip: when you feel that first head shake, keep steady pressure but don't horse them. They'll make several strong runs before giving up.
